Focus on Ireland

Over the past decade we’ve seen many Irish shorts, many of which made it to our film selections. Irish shorts are characterised by their high artistic value and these are often widely appreciated (and awarded) audience favourites. That is why, this year, we present a retrospective of the wide range of films from the ‘Emerald Isle’ in our program: Focus on Ireland.

The 2016 Academy Awards – with many Irish nominations and wins – were proof of the recent rise of Ireland as a filmmaking nation with worldwide recognition. It shows how creativity and ambition run in the blood of the Irish and that it’s a country with high quality output and great artistic potential.

"Irish shorts are often audience favorites."

To emphasise the different characteristics of Irish shorts, we have curated three programs. Each of these programs focuses on a segment in the Irish short film industry at which it excels. Take Home Sweet Home, a screening of beautiful shorts about the houses we live in and the people we share them with. An ode to that special place called home. Animation Nation is a diverse selection of the most eye-catching shorts from Irelands gifted animation filmmakers. And last but not least, Going for Gold shows the Oscar winners and nominees, curated together with Dery O’Brien of Network Ireland Television.
