Does our democracy still have a future in the age of social media? We live in a world where information flows are endless, attention is scarce, and online platforms exert increasing influence on how we think, vote, and engage in conversation with one another. From algorithms that determine what we see to foreign and domestic influence: the media landscape is changing rapidly. But can our democracy keep up with that pace?
In this Film & Talk, we delve into that question using films and conversations. Between the films, we zoom in on how conservative forces exert their influence on the formation of our opinions. Who is behind this, and who is being appealed to by conservative subcultures like the manosphere? In this program, we also look for solutions; what can we counter this, and how do we keep our democracy healthy?
Our guest is writer and program maker Nienke ’s Gravemade, who takes a critical look at online culture and the influence of digital movements on our worldview. Additionally, musician and writer Aafke Romeijn joins the discussion. In her work, she explores how technology, media, and personal data are becoming increasingly intertwined, and what that means for how we live and are perceived. Joep Bos-Coenraad, a GroenLinks council member specializing in digital themes and the influence of Big Tech, brings the political perspective: how do you translate these developments into policy and concrete solutions?
With: Nienke 's Gravemade, Aafke Romeijn and Joep Bos-Coenraad.
