Gender non-conforming people existed in the past but we need to redefine our search terms in order to find them. These shorts offer a how-to in speculative history, and draw attention to how the accusation of speculation has been used to dismiss contemporary queer voices. Often by the institution that had erased transhistory from the record.
The four shorts will be followed by a conversation with filmmaker and programmer Edie Barnabas and queer activist Suus te Braak, exploring what draws queer people to seek themselves in the past, and how asserting our prior existence is inseparable from the demand for our ongoing liberation.
This program is curated by Edie Barnabas.
