In April, Go Short returns as an arena for short films

Filmmakers in Focus explore games, internet culture, and hypercapitalism in contemporary society

From April 7 through April 12, Go Short – International Short Film Festival Nijmegen will take place for the 18th time. During the festival, LUX and its surroundings will be buzzing with short films that challenge, inspire, and surprise. There is a strong focus on current themes, new talent, and the latest developments in the film world. Film professionals from all over the world will travel to Nijmegen to immerse themselves—together with audiences—in the diversity that short film has to offer. The full festival program will be announced soon, but Go Short is already offering a sneak peek with the announcement of two special featured artists.

Gala Hernández López is a filmmaker, artist, and researcher. In her essay films, she zooms in on specific subcultures that emerge from our hypercapitalist system, offering a critical yet dreamlike perspective on a contemporary—and sometimes futuristic—maze of cryopreservation, cryptocurrencies, and influencers who promise success. At Go Short, her trilogy will be screened in its entirety in the Netherlands for the first time, followed by an in-depth discussion with Gala Hernández López herself.

Kara Gut

Kara Güt is a multidisciplinary artist whose primary focus is on digital media and video games. In her work, she explores human intimacy in virtual worlds, where power dynamics often function differently and internet culture plays a major role. In addition to seeing a selection of her video work, audiences can also attend and participate in an interactive performance in which, Güt searches for human connection within the violent online environment of Red Dead Redemption 2.

The festival program

At the moment, the selection committee is putting the finishing touches on the competition programs. The films selected for the Dutch, European, New Arrivals, and Music Video competitions will be announced in mid-February. This is a special moment for filmmakers, as the selected films are chosen from nearly 3,500 submissions. Winners of the Go Short Awards then qualify for consideration for the Academy Awards, the European Film Awards, and the BAFTA's.

In addition, the festival features carefully curated thematic programs and returning favorites such as the Oscar and Comedy Shorts. There will also be Late Night programs, a film pub quiz in collaboration with VPRO, a talk show on democracy and social media in collaboration with Wintertuin, and children’s programs for various age groups. Visitors can also relax at the festival grounds, with food trucks, music, and a free game and VR expo open to everyone.

The full program will be announced soon at www.goshort.nl

Day passes and Festival passes will be available starting February 16 at www.goshort.nl. Individual ticket sales begin on March 11.
